  Protective Pruning of Roses  
 
  Once the last frost has passed, sometime in early spring or late winter, is prime pruning season for rose gardeners. How you prune depends on the aesthetic effect you're aiming for, but here's a universal tip:
Until the rose's stem heals over the pruning cut, the wound is a prime spot for infection by insects or diseases. To prevent this, dunk your shears in a mixture that's equal parts water and household bleach before you make each cut to ward off any damage.
